“Fracking” waste-water filtration

Hydraulic fracturing–”fracking”–requires a lot of water to crack the rocks far below the surface and allow the entrapped gas bubbles to reach the bore-hole and then surface. To keep the fractures, generated by shocks of water-pressure open, little silica sand particles are sent down together with the water into the bore-hole. Also, gelatin is added to the water to keep the sand-particles in float in the water. Typically two-thirds of the water pressed into a bore-hole comes back out over the course of a couple of months, containing sand, natural oils, microorganisms from the ground, high concentrations of sodium chloride, and many other contaminants.

To be able to remove dissolved solids from water using technologies like Reverse Osmosis, all of the particulate matter in the water must first be removed.
