Seccua filtration, which started as a medical technology for kidney dialysis, is the most effective and efficient method for water purification on the market. The purification process uses a semipermeable membrane with pore sizes 20 nanometers (0.02μm) across, which is smaller than all known waterborne diseases: such as the legionella bacteria. Because of this, Seccua filtration offers a near-perfect barrier against viruses, parasites, and bacteria–without the use of chemicals or Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. At the same time, turbidity–a measure of how cloudy or murky the water looks from particles floating around in it–and all other suspended solids are removed from the water in a single step. The end result is crystal-clear drinking water.

Seccua filtration removes more than 99.99% of all viruses and has been proven in extensive testing to filter up to to 99.9999% of all bacteria, producing some of the safest drinking water possible. It has been tested to meet Germany’s Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches (DVGW) standards, National Science Foundation (NSF) standards, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for pathogen removal. Seccua’s solution portfolio is comprised of three different products: UrSpring, Virex Pro, and Phoenix.


The UrSpring systems are used to remove pathogens from city water lines at the cold-water point of entry for private homes or apartment buildings with up to 30 units. They are also often applied to supply safe drinking water and to remove pathogens and turbidity from private wells, e.g. for lake-front cottages or private hunting lodges. UrSpring systems protect diplomatic embassies in newly industrializing countries. They are used to remove legionella and pseudomonas from water lines in Dentistry or Doctors’ offices. It’s used on the Siemens-built high-speed trains commuting between St. Petersburg and Moscow: Seccua UrSpring purifies the drinking water for guests at the on-board restaurant and showers. The UrSpring systems require very low maintenance and operate at low driving pressures (0.5 bar / 7 psi).

There are three main UrSpring components :

UrSpring Home or UrSpring Well: using a 20 nanometer filter to protect against even the smallest viruses known to mankind, the core of UrSpring will produce the safest drinking water that also has crystal clear clarity.

UrSpring HotWater: a separate system to provide protection for the hot-water line of a home or business, where bacteria and viruses grow the fastest.

UrSpring Biofilter: used in conjunction with UrSpring Home or UrSpring Well, the Biofilter’s activated charcoal neutralizes chemical odors and flavors, as well as trace toxins that have seeped into the water supply, transforming it into fresh tasting water.

Virex Pro

The Virex Pro is an intelligent filtration system that can purify up to a maximum of 3,900 litres of water an hour (18 GPM).

Seccua is the world market leader for this patented technology: it automatically detects how badly contaminated the filter is and automatically carries out cleaning processes at appropriate intervals, if required, with automatic chemical enhancement. The control unit independently adjusts the interval between filter cleanses, as well as the length of time each filter is cleaned, depending on the water quality, thereby ensuring simple operation and optimised running costs. The Virex Pro and Phoenix systems also feature an integrated membrane integrity test, which complies with US EPA and German DVGW standards. The membrane filters used are regularly and independently checked for damage; in the event of a membrane fault, the system is stopped automatically and triggers an alarm locally and remotely. Thanks to this innovation, the removal of waterborne diseases from drinking water and a constant high quality of water is guaranteed.


Within Seccua’s range of products, the most powerful system is Phoenix. It combines all the features of the Virex Pro unit with a space-saving, scalable approach to reach up to 43,000 litres of water an hour (190 GPM) of filtration performance. This system is ideal for disinfecting surface, spring and well water as well as for removing sediment or treating high flows of water in industrial processes. The Phoenix unit has also been installed many times at the point of entry for water lines in public buildings, large apartments or condominiums, medical offices, or hospitals to protect the buildings’ water supply from legionella and other contaminants entering from the main water supply. It not only acts as a firewall, but it has also proven in many cases that existing legionella contamination and biofouling in water lines reduce significantly within only a couple of weeks after installation. From Legionella-removal in buildings to certified removal of pathogens in Public Water Supplies
Legionella can be found in nearly every well. They reach into the water mains of our cities through public waterways and into our buildings. Legionella require temperatures above 20°C (70 °F) to flourish, which they find in some of our cities’ water mains, as well as the cold and warm water lines of our buildings. Latest studies have shown that Legionella are able to resist hot water of 70 °C (158 °F) for more than 60 minutes. Inside biofilm–clusters of organisms that adhere to a surface by interlocking their structures and which is present in every piping system–Legionella survive chemicals like chlorine, which is not able to reach into every showerhead in a concentration high enough to efficiently disinfect and kill all Legionella. Furthermore, in most of our water-lines single-cell organisms are present, like Amoeba. Amoeba eat Legionella, but cannot digest them, so they keep growing inside Amoebas. When hot water or chlorine approaches an Amoeba, they often turn into most resistant cysts, which again turn back to its normal state when the attack by chemicals or temperature is over. Unfortunately, that is also the case in our lungs, where Amoebas are then killed by our immune system and set free the Legionellae inside in big numbers, leading to Pontiac-fever or Pneumonia. Seccua filtration, applied at Point-of-Entry of cold water lines into a building, prevents Legionella and all other pathogens from entering into the building. It has proven that after installation of a Seccua unit at Point-of-Entry, Legionella-counts at Point-of-use drops quickly, often to below detection limits.

Public Water Systems are often forced to use wells or springs for drinking water generation, which are under the influence of surface water. Typically those water systems are found in areas with only little top-soil, e.g. in Mountain ranges or deserts. Only a few minutes or hours after rainfall-events, the water from those wells can carry turbidity, together with pathogenic bacteria and parasites like Cryptosporidium. But studies have shown, that those pathogens can occur in affected wells also without turbidity appearing simultaneously, at almost any time. Cryptosporidium is highly infectious: In 1993 more than 400,000 people in the Milwaukee (USA) area got ill from Cryptosporidium, spread through the Public Water System, at least 104 people died as a consequence of that outbreak. But not only Crypto are a threat to our drinking water quality: Conventional technologies, like chlorination and UV disinfection, cannot deal with turbidity spikes in the feed water. They are best used on crystal clear water with only pathogens left in it – but where can such water be found? In opposite to that, Seccua filtration technology has proven to remove all bacteria, parasites and virus together with turbidity from water in one single treatment step. Seccua filtration technology has been tested to US EPA standards for full pathogen removal and has been approved by many States in the US, amongst those the State of California, for use compliant with US LT Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule 2. Seccua filtration is successfully applied in hundreds of installations worldwide.

Similar to Public Water systems, private wells, supplying farms, cottages and lodges, suffer from the same difficulties. In many cases they get their water from lakes directly or wells under the influence of surface water. Other than Public Water supplies, equipment that goes into such application has to be even more rugged and easy to use without compromising on its performance. In test, undertaken by the Minnesota Department of Public Health, Seccua filtration, in conjunction with effective pre-treatment technology, has shown to effectively reduce color from the water and therefore reduce carcinogenic by-products from chlorination.

Revolutionary Seccua Technology allows treatment of Water in Hydraulic Fracturing
Hydraulic fracturing – fracking – requires a lot of water. Water is used to crack the rocks far below the surface and allow the entrapped gas bubbles to reach the bore-hole and then surface. To keep the fractures, generated by shocks of water-pressure open, little silica sand particles are sent down together with the water into the bore-hole. Also, gelatin is added to the water to keep the sand-particles in float in the water. Typically, two-thirds of the water pressed into a bore-hole comes back out over the course of a couple of months. This water contains sand, natural oils, bacteria from the ground, high concentrations of sodium chloride and many other contaminants. To be able to remove dissolved solids like sodium chloride from such water using technologies like Reverse Osmosis, all particles have to be removed first.
